Sailing Courses 2008

10% discount off courses available for fully paid bookings made before 1st March.  

Our courses run from 0930 to 1700 with a maximum of 6 students to 1 instructor.

You can book on one of our courses or we can provide instruction for small groups or private tuition basis for 2:1 or 1:1.

Prices start from £20pp for a group, £30pp for 2:1 tuition and £40 for 1:1 tuition, for a taster session.
Courses: 2 day - £149, 3 day - £195, 5 day - £285. Prices are per person.


Taster Sessions –
1½ or 3 hours
Discover the fun of sailing in a 4-person boat with an expert instructor on the beautiful and peaceful Pitsford Water. These sessions can be arranged for a group or private tuition basis on any day of the week at times to suit you.


RYA Start Sailing -
2 days
This course provides a safe, fun introduction to sailing for complete beginners. You will learn how to rig, launch, sail and return to shore safely.

RYA Basic Skills – 2 days or 3 days
This course builds on your Level 1 skills (or previous helming experience), giving you more in-depth tuition, including sailing around a course and recovering your boat after a capsize. By the end of the course you should have the skills and confidence to be able to sail on your own in light winds. The 2 day course is for those who are doing the Start Sailing course immediately before the Basic Skills course. These will run on the last 2 days on the dates below. If you wish to do the 2 courses over 5 days you will benefit from an extra day’s sailing, giving you more confidence and experience. If you have had a short break since you did your Start Sailing course, we strongly recommend you book on the 3 day course. On successful completion of this course you will be given FREE 3 months membership to Northampton Sailing Club.

RYA Start Sailing & Basic Skills –
5 Days
This course is the most popular way to learn to sail from scratch. It aims to take you from being a complete beginner to having the skills and knowledge to sail on your own in light winds. On successful completion of this course you will be given FREE 3 months membership to Northampton Sailing Club. The courses usually run Monday to Friday.

Private Tuition

The popular “fast-track” way of learning – enabling you to gain skills and confidence quicker. We offer 1:1 or 2:1 tuition.

Boat Hire

This is a great way to hone your skills after learning the basics and try out different boats. We have RS Visions, Picos, Toppers, Lasers available for hire for 2 hourly sessions. Advanced Courses For competent level 2 sailors with at least one season’s sailing experience.

RYA Seamanship Skills
2 days
This course will improve your sailing skills, enabling you to sail in moderate winds. You will be taught how to reef afloat, recover a crew overboard, anchor, sailing backwards, sailing without a rudder or centreboard and how to recover a boat from total inversion. This course is also useful for those who want to gain skills towards becoming an instructor.

RYA Start Racing
2 days This course covers all you need to know to get you into the exciting world of racing at club level. Tuition will include boat tuning, boat handling, starting, racing rules, tactics and mark rounding.

SR1 - Sat 21 & 28 June


RYA Sailing with Spinnakers
2 days This course introduces you to the thrill of sailing with a spinnaker and includes the skills needed to hoist, drop and fly a spinnaker. Further courses can be run if required.

SP1 - Sat/Sun 11/12 October


RYA Performance Sailing
2 days This course covers how to sail performance dinghies to the best advantage in all wind conditions, sailing two-person spinnaker boats. This course is for competent Level 2 sailors with at least one full season’s sailing experience since learning to sail.
